The Town Council has approved its budget for 2026/2027 at ยฃ322,380 in January 2026, supporting improvements to local services. After review and discussion, the Town Council made the decision not to increase its precept for the coming financial year. By setting the precept at ยฃ310,704, the council has worked to balance the need to maintain services while being mindful of the financial challenges faced by residents. A contribution from Council balances has been used to make up the shortfall between the precept and the agreed budget figure.

Newbiggin Town Council look to long term planning and in the future will engage with the community for their input.

This means residents will see no increase in the Town Council portion of their Council Tax across all Bands.

Band D is the middle band of Council Tax and represents the amount of Council Tax paid on an average property in the area. However due to the rateable values being so low in Newbiggin most households pay Band A council tax. Band D will remain at ยฃ198.51 per household and Band A will remain at ยฃ132.34 per household for 2026/27.

Cllr Gwen Woodman, Mayor of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea said:

โ€œWe recognise that many households are facing real financial pressures at the moment, and this was an important factor in the Councilโ€™s decision-making. By keeping the precept at the same level, we are aiming to avoid placing additional strain on residents while continuing to provide valued local services. At the same time, the Council remains focused on careful long-term planning to ensure we can protect and enhance services for the town, both now and in the years ahead.โ€

The budget allows the Town Council to continue supporting essential community services, including:

  • Childrenโ€™s Holiday Leisure Programmes via Northumberland County Council Sports Development

  • Newbiggin Nipper Transport Service

  • Wansbeck Valley Foodbank

  • Community Grants Scheme for local groups and organisation

Awards and Events

  • Community and Garden Awards

  • Christmas Light Switch On

Planning for the future

  • Expansion and surveillance of the CCTV system

  • New activities for children and/or young adults

  • More events in Newbiggin

Parish and Town Councils are the first tier of local government and are the closest to the community they serve. Newbiggin by the Sea Town Council is the only statutory public authority whose only focus is on the Newbiggin by the Sea Parish and the residents that live here.

The Council remains committed to responsible financial management, transparency, and long-term planning, ensuring Newbiggin by the Sea continues to thrive while keeping costs manageable for residents for the year ahead.
