Councillor Gwen Woodman, Mayor of Newbiggin by the Sea, thanked everyone who came together to honour those who gave their lives in service. β€œOur community once again showed its strength and unity,” she said. β€œI want to especially thank Newbiggin Veterans Association for organising and delivering the event, Reverend O’Grady for leading the Service, and Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band for providing music. It was wonderful to see people of all ages taking part β€” from our veterans to young families β€” making this year’s Remembrance truly meaningful. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so respectful and memorable.”
Β
Councillor Gwen Woodman also paid tribute to the special touches from the local community. β€œA heartfelt thank you to Lindsey at Artisan for the beautiful poppy-wrapped trees in Memorial Park, and to everyone who decorated the column at the War Memorial. It’s these thoughtful, hands-on contributions that really show the pride, care, and togetherness of our town.”
Β
Following a short service, wreaths were laid at the Newbiggin Colliery Memorial. Everyone then made their way to Front Street to muster for the parade to Newbiggin Memorial Park.
Β
Upon the call to order, the Exhortation was read out by Parade Marshal Marc. The Last Post and Reveille were performed beautifully by Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band Principal Cornet Player, Sara James, and a military trench whistle signalled the start and end of the two-minute silence, which was respectfully observed by all in attendance.
Β
Wreaths were laid by Deputy Lord Lieutenant Keith Green, Mayor Gwen Woodman, and County Councillor Ben Audsley. Further wreaths, reflecting gratitude, were laid by members of the community.
Β
Following the wreath laying, Reverend O’Grady conducted a service, leading hymns, prayers, and the National Anthem.
Β
Cllr Woodman added:
Β
β€œIt was incredibly moving to see our community come together to honour those who gave so much for our freedom. The turnout, the respect, and the care shown by everyone reflect the strong spirit of Newbiggin by the Sea. Lest we forget.”
