🌟Introducing Councillor Gwen Woodman, Mayor of Newbiggin by the Sea🌟
At the Annual Meeting of the Town Council held on Wednesday 7th May 2025, Councillor Gwen Woodman was elected by the Council to be Chairman and Mayor of Newbiggin by the Sea. Also elected at the meeting was Councillor Jan Casey to the office of Vice-Chairman and Deputy Mayor. We are delighted to introduce Councillor Gwen Woodman, our newly appointed Mayor of Newbiggin by the Sea!
A true local, Gwen was born and raised in Newbiggin and educated here before attending university in Liverpool. After completing her studies, she returned to the area and dedicated nearly 50 years to teaching, shaping the lives of countless young people. Even now, she remains passionate about education, serving as a volunteer on Northumberland County Council’s School Appeals Panel.
Gwen is deeply embedded in our community, lending her voice to the Newbiggin Choir by the Sea, assisting with the Newbiggin Pantomime Group, and volunteering at the Elizabethan Hall. She is a strong advocate for the incredible work of local volunteers, who play a vital role in supporting residents and promoting our town.
With four years of experience as Chair of the Finance & HR Committee and as the council’s representative on the NALC County Committee, Gwen brings a wealth of knowledge to her new role.
“As Mayor, I am particularly keen to engage with young people and families, encouraging them to take pride in Newbiggin and helping them achieve their ambitions. I strongly believe in fostering a strong, vibrant community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
“I remain committed to meeting with residents, local organisations, and fellow councillors to ensure Newbiggin continues to grow as a welcoming, exciting place to live and visit. Together with the Town Council, I look forward to celebrating our beautiful bay, supporting local initiatives, and ensuring Newbiggin remains a thriving coastal gem.”
