Contribution to Community Choir

On the evening of Thursday 12th January, Councillor Louise Spratt, Mayor of Newbiggin by the Sea, accompanied by Councillor Alison Sutherland, Deputy Mayor, visited Newbiggin Community Choir by the Sea to present them with a donation of £300.

Gillian Storey, Chairman of the Choir, had applied for a small grant to fund the cost of microphones, cables, and stands for external use which was agreed at a meeting on the Town Council held on 16th November.

Newbiggin Community Choir by the Sea have approx. 30 members and meet at 6pm every Thursday evening at Homelyn House, Haven View, Newbiggin by the Sea. Last night was their first session back following a Christmas break.

The Choir is a very inclusive group and they welcome all members.  Gillian said ‘the Choir helps combat loneliness and reduces isolation, singing has even been researched and proven to help some mental health issues, including depression‘.

Councillor Spratt commented that ‘it is wonderful that there are so many active groups in our community, it is always lovely to hear the Choir performing at local community events, and it was a pleasure to help them by funding this essential kit‘.
