Veterans on 80th Anniversary of D Day standing in front of Memorial Park
Today at Newbiggin Memorial Park, we gathered at 11am to mark the D-Day 80th Commemoration with a heart-warming and well-attended event. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Newbiggin Veterans for their exceptional organisation and delivery, and to Reverend O'Grady for leading a moving service. Special thanks go to Keith Shirley and a representative from Fusiliers Band for their beautiful musical contributions to the service.
We also had representatives from Grace Darling School, who delivered a touching reading of the poem "Normandy" by Juno Veteran Cyril Crain. Our heartfelt thanks to the children and Head Teacher for their involvement.
We appreciate all representatives who joined us in remembrance.
Following the wreath laying, Reverend O'Grady guided us through hymns, prayers, and the National Anthem.
Councillor Tom Roll, Vice Chair of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, expressed his gratitude, saying, "It was a lovely turnout from our community in Newbiggin, all paying tribute on this important day. Thank you to everyone who came together to honour the fallen on this significant 80th Anniversary." Copy of the 'Normandy' poem below.
Come and stand at my side on the beach here, See the sea as it was on that day. See the ships and the boats and the landing craft, As they moved on their perilous way. We were all of us young and we trembled, As we waited for H-Hour to come. And the sound of the guns was like thunder, And the beat of the heart like a drum. Now the years have all passed and we're older, And the memories are starting to fade. But we'll never forget all our comrades, And the ultimate price that they paid.
