Grant Funding available for local organisations for 'schemes to assist Newbiggin residents suffering hardship as a consequence of the current rollout of Universal Credit in our area'.
At a meeting of the Town Council held Wednesday 21st November it was agreed unanimously to ring fence £2,000 of the remaining grant budget for use by local organisations for ‘schemes to assist Newbiggin residents suffering hardship as a consequence of the current rollout of Universal Credit in our area’.
Universal Credit was rolled out in Northumberland from November which means some households benefit claims may be delayed by up to 5 weeks.
Councillor Malcolm Peden, Chair of the Town Council commented ‘the Council are aware of the many problems that may be caused by the roll out of Universal Credit and are keen to ensure that those affected are directed to appropriate avenues of support’.
Newbiggin groups and organisations are invited to apply for funding outlining, in detail, any proposed schemes that assist Newbiggin residents suffering hardship.
Delegated powers were given to the Grants Committee to consider all forthcoming applications.

Individuals are not eligible to apply for funding.
Councillor Lynn Burns, Chair of the Grants Committee, added ‘if organisations wish to come forward to put in a grant application to help the residents of Newbiggin by-the-Sea, download a application form from the Town Council website.
This scheme will enable us to support our community’.
