Portas Project funding success!

We are extremely excited that Newbiggin by the Sea has been awarded £100,000 of central government funding to be one of twelve towns testing out a range of ideas to improve the health of our high street. Backed by retail guru Mary Portas, Queen of Shops, and with her direct involvement along with other key national experts and groups, the Town Council is contributing an additional £15,000 towards the cost of realising the project ideas, and we will be working with the Traders Association to turn the proposals ideas into reality. You can get involved with the Town Team by contacting Crystal Hinds at the Newbiggin Maritime Centre at centre.manager@newbigginmaritimecentre.org.uk.

Cllr Rebecca McCready, Chair of the Council and Town Mayor, says, "This funding marks the start of 'Phase Two' in the regeneration of Newbiggin by the Sea. It offers many exciting possibilities for capturing imagination and initiative, and I look forward to working with the Town Team in realising the ambitions of the bid. The Town Council will be actively, as well as financially, involved in this project, and congratulations must be given to the initial team, including Crystal Hinds, NOrma Thompson and Gully Atwal-Churchley."

Mayor on the radio!

On Thursday 29th March 2012, Cllr Rebecca McCready was interviewed on Synergy radio, a local radio station that was test-broadcasting at the time, as part fulfilment of a full radio license. She talked about the title Mayor, and the range of events coming up in Newbiggin by the Sea this summer.

Town Plan being developed

We are currently incorporating the results from the residents survey into our 5-year Town Plan. Thank you for taking part in this consultation exercise - we've had some very valuable feedback and comments. The plan is taking a while to develop, as we include a wide range of other feedback and historical information, plus seek further consultation. The Plan is now out for consultation by local Councillors and Officers.

The Council's Aims and Objectives are also available online.

Public Toilets upgraded

The Town Council, in partnership with Northumberland County Council, have employed Newbiggin-based plumber John Key to upgrade the public toilet block at Church Point. During the course of a week, John and his colleagues replaced all toilet pans, installed toilet roll holders, painted the floor and walls and improved other aspects of these facilities.

Comments received so far have been extremely positive, one even suggesting that we now have the nicest toilet block in the area! In addition to physical improvements, the Town Council are paying for an additional clean on every Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer until the end of September, to try to keep them in a clean and usable condition. We would welcome your feedback on this project - please get in touch. We also plan to review public toilet provision again in the autumn, so this is by no means the last of it!

Town Calendar published

Newbiggin Town Council have published a leaflet summarising some of the events taking place this summer in Newbiggin by the Sea. It's a busy diary, so check it out and come along to support these events.

Dates for hosting the Farmers' Market trial have been set at Saturday August 14th and Saturday September 11th. We hope you can join us at these events.

Current projects

Working groups are currently investigating community public transport, in response to the removal of the little white bus service which will be withdrawn in mid July; Woodhorn Church, to identify possible future uses for this historic building; and farmers market, to run two trials this summer. We are also augmenting the service level provided at the Prospect Place public toilets block, with additional cleaning each weekend during the summer, and some physical improvements.
