Road Safety

We have worked with the County Council to install and maintain a speed warning sign at the Spital entrance to Newbiggin by the Sea. The sign was bought and installed by Cllr Jimmy Lang, and maintenance and repairs will be funded by the Town Council.

As part of the Local Transport Plan set by the County Council for 2010, a safe foot and cycle path connecting the east end estates with the new Academy primary school site has been secured. This project has been funded jointly by Northumberland County Council and Sustrans, and will be complete by early 2012.

The Local Transport Plan priorities for 2012 that we have submitted to the County Council for consideration and possible inclusion in the County's transport plan include:

  1. A section of new cycle track and footpath widening scheme adjacent to Spital Farm to provide a safe walking and cycle route to the High School;
  2. A traffic calming scheme in the Collingwood road system to complement the safe route to school scheme;
  3. Resident parking schemes to be introduced in Beach Terrace; Prospect Place; Vernon Place.

Please note that item 3 does not intend to prevent residents from parking outside their houses: instead, it is intended to prevent others from parking there, so by making it easier for residents to park near to their house.
